Year 1 Summer 1 2024

This half term our topic is all about ‘Superheroes’, we will launch the topic by attending superhero school, the children will try some superfoods, do exercises, create a mask for their superhero identity and be involved in some problem-solving tasks.  The children will be learning about what characteristics a superhero needs and how a superhero behaves. They will use this information to write a set of instructions explaining ‘How to be a Superhero!’. We will also be thinking about ‘real life’ heroes, who they are, what kind of jobs they do and how they help us. We will focus on learning about the police as real-life heroes. In English, we will also be enjoying the ‘Supertato’ texts written by Sue Hendra. The focus is to read and write words using the suffix ‘ed’ and how to use exclamation marks to show when something exciting has happened in a story. We will be writing our own version of the battle between Supertato and the Evil Pea!

If you are a real-life hero and would like to come into school to talk to the children about your job, please speak to a member of staff in Year 1. We would like to hear about how you help people.

In Maths, we will be focusing on measurement (length, height, mass, and volume). We will then be moving into division and multiplication. We will learn to read, write and understand mathematical ideas using multiplication (x), division (÷), and equals (=) signs. The children will start to use arrays and will use grouping and sharing to divide.

Thank you for your continued support with helping your child to read at home. In Phonics, we will revisit all the sounds taught to prepare children for the phonics screening check in June 2024. More information on the phonics screening check can be found on the Hempshill Hall School website.

Please continue to use the home/school diaries to keep in touch as well as making comments about reading, these are checked every day and are especially important so that reading at home can be counted and rewarded.

You can also use our year group email to communicate with us and ask any questions you may have year1@hempshillhallprimary.com

With Thanks,

The Year One Team
